Otemachi and Takebashi Area Guide

  • Entrance to the Imperial Palace

What kind of town is Otemachi and Takebashi?

The area around Takebashi Station is a central Tokyo area with a calm atmosphere and the greenery of the Imperial Palace close at hand.

The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, which still retains the appearance of the former Edo Castle, is a popular place for relaxation and enjoyment of nature in all four seasons. Within walking distance are cultural facilities such as the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and the Science Museum, providing opportunities to satisfy one's intellectual curiosity.

Restaurants and stores can be found in the Palaceside Building, which is directly connected to Takebashi Station, and commercial facilities such as OOTEMORI and OTEMACHI ONE are located in the nearby Otemachi Station area. The proximity to the Imperial Palace and the many schools make the entire area a safe and secure place to live.

The Takebashi Station area, where history and modernity intersect, is expected to continue to develop as an urban center with diverse attractions.

  • Bamboo bridge

Origin of “Takebashi” and its relationship to the Tokugawa family

Takebashi is a bridge over the Hirakawa moat in front of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. There are two theories about the origin of the place name: one is that it was a simple bamboo bridge over the inner moat of Edo Castle, and the other is that it was named after Aritake Shiro, a vassal of the Go-Hojo clan, and over time the sound changed to “Takebashi”. Old maps show the bridge as “Gonai-kata Toll Bridge,” and there was a time when it was also used as a bridge leading to the O-oku (inner palace) of Edo Castle.

The area around Takebashi Bridge is also deeply connected with the Tokugawa family. Takebashi Gate, an important gate of Edo Castle, is located nearby, and Takebashi Palace, where Tokugawa Ieyasu's grandson Sen Hime spent the last years of his life, was also located here. In addition, the vast mansion of the Hitotsubashi Tokugawa family, which produced the shogun, was also located nearby and had an influence on the shogunate administration. Thus, Takebashi is known as a historically important place.
