  The Roots of Shinsaibashi: The Bridge That Built the Area

  The name “Shinsaibashi” derives from a bridge built at his own expense by Okada Shinsai, who played a pivotal role in the excavation of the Nagahori River during the Edo period (1622).

  With the completion of this bridge, shops began to cluster in the surrounding area, and Shinsaibashi developed into one of Osaka’s leading commercial districts. In the Meiji era, it was transformed into a state-of-the-art “iron bridge,” continuing to captivate many people as a symbol of a modern city illuminated by gas lamps at night.

  Later, with the reclamation of the river during the Showa era, the actual bridge disappeared, but its historical symbolism has been carefully preserved to this day. Today, Nagahori-dori—where the bridge once stood—features beautiful gas-lamp-style streetlights and a bridge monument that recreate the atmosphere of that era, conveying the glamorous spirit of the past to the present day.
